Lakme was a new opera for me, until purchasing this recording, having only heard the popular Flower duet and Bell song. It is far more rewarding to listen to the complete opera, particularly when the cast is as good as this one. The opera is full with wonderful tunes and to hear the Bell song in its dramatic context does it full justice. Natalie Dessay is a perfect Lakme. This is a dazzling.
The famous duet of Lakme and Malika is a treat, as well as the Bell Song. The rest of the cast is OK but not thrilling. This is filmed in front of a live audience, so some of the scenes look not so great in terms of illumination. The settings correspond to the composer and librettist ideas and are a delight to watch. Overall, a very nice experience worth buying the BlueRay version. I just hope.
Natalie Dessay’s kaleidoscopic career goes on apace, six years after her farewell to the opera stage.Between her raved-at appearances in the theatre, her sparkling wit in French television talk shows and her brilliant incursions in the world of musical comedy, the French soprano still has time for what is known as serious music, if such a term could at all apply to an art- ist known for the.
The Bell Song from Delibes' opera, Lakme is just as famous and easily recognizable as another aria from the same opera - the Flower Duet. In the town square of a village in India, Lakme, as instructed by her father, tells the legend of a pariah's daughter who saved the son of Brahma the Creator, Vishnu. Lakme's father hopes the story will lure a trespasser out into the open, revealing himself.
Highlights of the opera are the famous Jasmine duet, Lakme's Bell Song which is often a showpiece for coloratura sopranos, and the duet between Gerald and Lakme near the conclusion of Act I. The music of Delibes flows and conductor Richard Bonynge handles it well. Though a highlights version of this recording is available, the complete recording has nuances that make the better known portions.
The opera is full with wonderful tunes and to hear the Bell song in its dramatic context does it full justice. Natalie Dessay is a perfect Lakme. This is a dazzling coloratura performance and will be the recording that all future Lakme's are compared with.
Artist In-Depth: Natalie Dessay Natalie Dessay is certainly one of the most important singers of the last several decades. While her voice does not appeal to all and her views about what opera is and should be are controversial, she has been an A-list singer for nearly two decades now due to her extraordinarily agile voice and her artistry, both within the song and on-stage. Born Nathalie.

The Bell Song (CD2 tr. 2) is her calling card but she is possibly even more lovely in the opening of act 3 (CD2 tr. 11) and also at the end of the opera (CD2 tr. 16-17). Swiss-born Libero De Luca who sings Gerald had an international career during the years after WW2 but from 1949 he was primarily active in the opera houses of Paris. He is stylish and nuanced. Once or twice he presses too much.

Lakme is one of Natalie Dessay's signature roles from which she sings the bell song. The arias that follow were mostly unfamiliar. The longest on this disc is Ophelia's fourth act aria from Thomas' Hamlet; an opera that is unfortunately not staged very often. Ms. Dessay is quite remarkable in capturing the drama of the moment. Among the rarities on the disc are arias from Chabrier's Le Roi.

LAKME WAS WRITTEN FOR A YOUNG AMERICAN saprano named Marie van Zandt. Although criticized for her accent, the premiere at the Opera Comique in 1883 was an enormous success and the work remained in the repertoire for roughly 80 years. While Lakme has languished on the international scene in recent years, it remains a relatively familiar item in France. This new EMI recording is the first to.
